How Long Does a Candle Actually Burn? Real Numbers
Valerie LacroixNobody answers this honestly. You buy a candle, there is a number on the box, and that is the end of the conversation. So here are ours, and more importantly, what sits behind them.
3 oz: 10 to 15 hours. 5 oz: 30 to 35 hours. 8 oz: 45 to 50 hours. Our wax melts, about 10 hours per cube, roughly 60 hours for a pack.
You may have noticed something odd. The 5 oz lasts about three times longer than the 3 oz, even though it does not hold three times the wax. That is not a mistake, and it is the best place to start if you want to understand how a candle really burns.
It is not the amount of wax that decides
Three things set how fast a candle burns: the shape of the vessel, the size of the wick, and the wax.
Shape first, because nobody thinks about it. A wide, shallow candle exposes a large surface of wax to the flame. A tall, narrow one exposes very little. Give them both the same amount of wax and the wide one will be gone first.
Our 3 oz is a shallow tin. Our 5 oz is a taller glass. That alone explains most of the gap between them.
The material adds to it. Metal conducts heat, glass holds it in. A tin warms up all over, so the wax pools faster across the whole surface.
Then the wick. A wick that runs large for its container burns hotter and empties it faster. One that runs too small never reaches the edges and digs a tunnel instead. Finding that balance is most of what candle making actually is, and it shifts with every fragrance.
The wax matters too, but less than people think. Soy burns at roughly 4 grams an hour, paraffin closer to 5. A coconut soy blend sits at the slower end. A little gentler, a little longer.
This is also why the rule you read everywhere, roughly 7 to 9 hours per ounce, never applies as written. It assumes a tall narrow glass. Most candles are not that.
The wooden wick changes things
A cotton wick burns upward, in a small teardrop flame. A wooden wick burns across its whole width, in a low, wide flame.
The consequence is concrete. A wooden wick heats a broader surface, faster. The pool of melted wax reaches the edges sooner, and less wax ends up stranded against the walls at the end. It is also where the little crackle comes from.
The trade-off is that it asks more of you. It needs a flame held on it for ten to twenty seconds to catch, and it is less forgiving of a wick that has not been trimmed.
What actually shortens your candle
The number on the box assumes ideal conditions. Here is what eats into it, in order of damage.
A wick left too long. The taller the wick, the bigger the flame, the faster it goes. A quarter inch, before every single burn.
This is the one that changes your numbers more than anything else on this list. Our times assume a trimmed wick and a small, steady flame. A candle burned with a tall flame will not give you what the label says, and no maker can promise otherwise. The wick is the part of the candle you control.
A draft. A candle near a window, a fan, or a busy hallway has a flame that flickers constantly. It burns more fuel, it heats unevenly, and it leaves black marks on the glass.
Sessions that are too short. A candle lit for twenty minutes here and there never forms a full pool. It digs a tunnel, and you lose the wax around the edges for good.
Sessions that are too long. After about four hours the wick slumps, the flame grows, and the wax overheats. Blow it out, let it cool, light it again later.
The one thing that decides everything: the first burn
This is the most important part of this article, and it is the part almost nobody does.
Wax has a memory. The first time you light it, your candle forms a pool of melted wax of a certain diameter. Every time after that, it will follow that same diameter. If your first pool stops halfway, your candle will tunnel for the rest of its life and you will throw away the wax around the edge.
The rule is simple: the first time, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the vessel before you blow it out. Count roughly one hour per inch of diameter. For our 5 oz, that means two to three hours on the very first burn.
It is a little long, yes. But it is the difference between a candle that gives you its full 35 hours and one that gives you 20 and leaves a ring of wasted wax behind.
